Nilsiä Museum

Nilsiä Museum is a local museum maintained by the Nilsiä Tradition and Culture Association. It preserves, researches and exhibits cultural heritage related to Nilsiä. The exhibition collections include a wide range of artifacts, photographs, videos and audio recordings.

The museum first opened to the public at Simola Farm as a storehouse museum in 1977 and later moved to the main building of the farm, which also serves as the Local Heritage Center.

In addition to the museum's permanent exhibition, which is displayed in the center's main building and barns, the museum also assembles and maintains temporary exhibitions with changing themes.

The Local Heritage Center also houses the summer theater building of the Nilsiä Amateur Theater. The museum has a café and a small museum shop, which are open during the museum's opening hours.

Collections

The foundation of the museum’s extensive collection consists of objects related to the traditional peasant way of life in Nilsiä area, gathered during the museum’s early years. Since then, the collections have been complemented with items connected to sports, music, schooling, textile and handicraft hobbies, local religious life, and national defense history.

The museum's specialties include a replica of a woolly mammoth molar found in Tahkolahti in the late 19th century, the Toivo Kärki collection, artifacts from Finland's oldest brush factory, and the collections of the Eastern Finland Winter Sports Museum.
